Artist’s Statement I have been making pottery for about 19 years. I like to make pots that people will use. I especially like to make pots that people eat out of, and drink from. We spend so much time eating and drinking together, and by ourselves, I think it is nice to have a favorite bowl or cup to use to nourish that part of us. I feel my pieces are not really finished till a person finds that special cup or plate or bowl and eats a special dish or enjoys a favorite beverage from it. Once a piece has found a home, then it is finished. Often I am thinking about a certain food or beverage when I make a piece, and I hope that pot will be found to be ideal for a person to use for that food or drink. Most of my influence comes from my teachers. I have been influenced by Asian types of techniques, glazes and firing. My pots are high-fired stoneware. When I can, I will wood-fire my pots, because I like to see what the raw fire will do. I rarely make anything the same, all my pieces are one of a kind, and that individuality is reiterated by the flames of wood-firing. |
